This is\u00a0why we decided to teach you how to create a cartoon flyer template to meet your own business goals by <a href=\"https:\/\/graphicmama.com\/blog\/adobe-illustrator-tutorials\/\">using Adobe Illustrator<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t get scared away by the complexity of the software because in this tutorial we are going to <strong>work mainly with\u00a0text and shapes.<\/strong> The tutorial is absolutely <strong>suitable for beginners.<\/strong>\u00a0We will also occasionally import assets here and there but this is a piece of cake, really.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The one thing you may find confusing about how to create a cartoon flyer template\u00a0is setting the document for print. If you are a regular\u00a0GraphicMama blog reader, however, there is a chance you&#8217;ve already done that in our tutorial about <a href=\"https:\/\/graphicmama.com\/blog\/monster-business-card-template-tutorial-freebie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how to create a monstrous business card.<\/a>\u00a0Setting up a document for a flyer template is very similar. We will just be using different dimensions.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Set Up The Document<\/h2>\n<p>The most common size for flyers is <strong>8.5&#215;11 inches<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 1:<\/strong> Create a New Document<\/h3>\n<p>Since repetition is the mother of all learning, we are going to walk you through this step one more time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6001\" src=\"https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/23102916\/document_setup.png\" alt=\"document_setup\" width=\"549\" height=\"556\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/23102916\/document_setup.png 549w, https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/23102916\/document_setup-296x300.png 296w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 549px) 100vw, 549px\" \/>Go to <strong>File -&gt; New<\/strong> and you will get the dialog box you see on the left.<\/p>\n<p>Give your document an <strong>appropriate name.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Set the N<strong>umber of Artboards<\/strong> to <strong>2<\/strong>. One for the front side of your flyer and one for its back side.<\/p>\n<p>Choose <strong>Inches<\/strong>\u00a0for <strong>Units<\/strong> and set the document&#8217;s Width to <strong>8.5 inches<\/strong> and it&#8217;s Height to <strong>11 inches<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Set the <strong>Bleeds<\/strong> for each side to <strong>0.25 inches<\/strong>. You can find more detailed information about bleeds in our tutorial on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/graphicmama.com\/blog\/how-to-make-a-business-card-template-with-bleeds-in-adobe-illustrator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How to Make a Business Card Template With Bleeds in Adobe Illustrator<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Expand the <strong>Advanced<\/strong> tab and set the\u00a0<strong>Color Mode<\/strong> to <strong>CMYK<\/strong> and the <strong>Raster Effects<\/strong> to <strong>300ppi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Click that tempting <strong>OK<\/strong> button and this is what you will get in your Illustrator canvas:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6005 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/23103817\/blank_artboards.png\" alt=\"blank_artboards\" width=\"910\" height=\"612\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/23103817\/blank_artboards.png 910w, https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/23103817\/blank_artboards-300x202.png 300w, https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/23103817\/blank_artboards-768x517.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 910px) 100vw, 910px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 2:<\/strong> Define Your Design&#8217;s Safe Area<\/h3>\n<p>Again, <a href=\"https:\/\/graphicmama.com\/blog\/how-to-make-a-business-card-template-with-bleeds-in-adobe-illustrator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">check out\u00a0this tutorial<\/a> if\u00a0you have no idea what the Safe Area is all about.<\/p>\n<p>Grab the <strong>Rectangle Tool (M), <\/strong>click anywhere on the artboard on the left\u00a0set the rectangles <strong>Width<\/strong> to <strong>8 inches<\/strong> and it&#8217;s <strong>Height<\/strong> to <strong>10.5 inches<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Select the rectangle we&#8217;ve just made and<strong> align it the very center of the left artboard<\/strong> using the alignment tools from the top bar of Illustrator&#8217;s interface.<\/p>\n<p>Repeat the last 2\u00a0steps for the right artboard or simply drag the rectangle on the right artboard while <strong>holding down the Alt key<\/strong> to make a copy of it. Make sure it&#8217;s in the center before proceeding to the next step.<\/p>\n<p>Now that you have these two slightly smaller rectangles centered in your artboards,\u00a0convert them to guides by <strong>selecting both of them<\/strong>, <strong>right-clicking<\/strong> and choosing <strong>Make Guides<\/strong> from the context drop-down menu.<\/p>\n<p>This is how your document should\u00a0look at this point:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6008\" src=\"https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/23105148\/safe_area.png\" alt=\"safe_area\" width=\"910\" height=\"612\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/23105148\/safe_area.png 910w, https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/23105148\/safe_area-300x202.png 300w, https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/23105148\/safe_area-768x517.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 910px) 100vw, 910px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>2. Design\u00a0Your Flyer<\/h2>\n<p>We are going to use the left artboard for our Flyer&#8217;s &#8220;face&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>You should already have an idea of what you are going after in terms of design. Our goal for this tutorial is to make it as simple as possible. So, we will be using\u00a0shapes, text and a graphic resources from our website &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/graphicmama.com\/cartoon-character\/nick\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Smartman<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 1:<\/strong> Background<\/h3>\n<p>In order to split the document into different sections, which\u00a0will be filled with content later, we should start with the background.<\/p>\n<p>Divide\u00a0the face of your cartoon flyer in two parts by creating a <strong>9-inch-wide<\/strong> rectangle. Its height is approximate.<\/p>\n<p>Grab the <strong>Direct Selection Tool (A) <\/strong>and then click on the rectangle. Four small corner points will appear in its corners. Click on the top left one and drag it down a bit\u00a0to\u00a0make a slope.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6030\" src=\"https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/23124945\/shape_point1.png\" width=\"910\" height=\"612\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/23124945\/shape_point1.png 910w, https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/23124945\/shape_point1-300x202.png 300w, https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/23124945\/shape_point1-768x517.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 910px) 100vw, 910px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Make sure your background elements are extended all the way to the red guidelines (The Bleeds).<\/strong>\u00a0This is necessary in order to prevent any white lines from being left on the final flyer after it&#8217;s trimmed down to its actual size by the printing company.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now you have space for your title and your most important content on the front of your cartoon flyer. This is a cartoon flyer after all, so let&#8217;s reserve some space for Nick, our cartoon businessman.<\/p>\n<p>You will have to make a triangle this time, and place it in the top right corner of the artboard. The easiest way to achieve this is to create a square and then delete its bottom left corner point. Go ahead and\u00a0try to achieve a result similar to this one:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6040\" src=\"https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/23135659\/backgrounds1.png\" width=\"910\" height=\"612\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/23135659\/backgrounds1.png 910w, https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/23135659\/backgrounds1-300x202.png 300w, https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/23135659\/backgrounds1-768x517.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 910px) 100vw, 910px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Step 2:<\/strong> Text<\/h2>\n<p>Now that your background is ready it&#8217;s time to add the key element of your cartoon flyer &#8211; the actual information.<\/p>\n<p>Start with your logo and title.<\/p>\n<p>For the logo we decided to simply use Nick&#8217;s full name. Download the <a href=\"https:\/\/fonts.google.com\/specimen\/Oswald\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oswalf Font Family<\/a> from Google Fonts if you want to use the exact same font from this tutorial. If not, you can use any other font from\u00a0your computer.<\/p>\n<p>Grab the <strong>Text Tool (T) <\/strong>and click anywhere on the left artboard. Enter the name of your company and press <strong>Esc. <\/strong>Select the text and set it&#8217;s font family to <strong>Oswald<\/strong> from the\u00a0field at the top, right next to <strong>Character<\/strong>.\u00a0Right next to this field, on the right, there is an option to choose the <strong>Style<\/strong> of the text &#8211; Light, Regular or Bold. It&#8217;s <strong>Regular<\/strong> in our case. A resource that our site has plenty\u00a0of. We chose <a href=\"https:\/\/graphicmama.com\/cartoon-character\/nick\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick<\/a>\u00a0for this\u00a0one.<\/p>\n<h4>Placing (importing) images and vector graphics in Adobe Illustrator<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to <strong>File -&gt; Place<\/strong>, and select the file you want to\u00a0import to your Illustrator document.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Link<\/strong> to create a link to the file, or deselect it to embed the artwork in the document.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Place<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>If you place something in Illustrator as a\u00a0linked file, you will need to provide the file\u00a0along with the AI document to the printing company.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now that we know how to place Nick, let&#8217;s go ahead and do that.<\/p>\n<p>Nick is a premium cartoon character from GraphicMama.
