In this first tutorial, we will explain what Character Animator is, what you need to use it, and how it works overall. For now, there will be more &#8220;talking&#8221; than &#8220;action&#8221;, but we really need to get through these details to properly introduce you to the program.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s get started!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>1. What does Character Animator do?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Character Animator<\/strong> (CA) is a new application by <strong>Adobe<\/strong>, that allows you to easily animate characters, using a webcam, a microphone and a set of simple to use tools. It is a wonderful program for creating character-driven short animations, explainer videos, presentations, and many more.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 800px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-11452-1\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/31134719\/what-does-ca-do.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/31134719\/what-does-ca-do.mp4\">https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/31134719\/what-does-ca-do.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>2. What do you need to use it?<\/b><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4>2.1. Adobe Creative Cloud Account<\/h4>\n<p>To work with Character Animator you need to have the <strong>Adobe<\/strong> <strong>Creative Cloud<\/strong> &#8211; a service that gives you access to different Adobe apps, according to your <strong>Creative Cloud plan<\/strong>. To use the Character Animator app, you will need not only it but also either <a href=\"https:\/\/graphicmama.com\/blog\/adobe-illustrator-tutorials\/\"><strong>Adobe Illustrator<\/strong><\/a> or <strong>Adobe Photoshop<\/strong> in your Creative Cloud plan. Follow this link to learn more about the service or choose a plan according to your needs: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/creativecloud.html\">Adobe Creative Cloud<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although it can be used as a standalone program, generally Character Animator is part of <strong>Adobe After Effects CC 2015 or later<\/strong>. That means if you have After Effects you already have Character Animator. A Puppet<\/h4>\n<p>You can use premade puppets, which you can directly import into the software, or you can prepare your own.<\/p>\n<p>How to create a working and properly set up character is a complex process, that is why we will dedicate the following tutorials of these series to it in detail (Links at the bottom of the article). For now, you need to know that Character Animator works with artwork created in<strong> Illustrator<\/strong> and <strong>Photoshop<\/strong> only.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11464 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/31135841\/ai-i-ps.jpg\" alt=\"Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop\" width=\"1322\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/31135841\/ai-i-ps.jpg 1322w, https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/31135841\/ai-i-ps-300x87.jpg 300w, https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/31135841\/ai-i-ps-768x222.jpg 768w, https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/31135841\/ai-i-ps-1024x297.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1322px) 100vw, 1322px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The way it works is when you import your character in CA, and you make changes on your character&#8217;s Illustrator (or Photoshop) file and click save, these changes are automatically adopted by Character Animator. In this way you can change anything on your character (colors, size, whole body parts) and the changes will instantly appear in CA.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 800px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-11452-2\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/31141637\/sync-change.mp4?_=2\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/31141637\/sync-change.mp4\">https:\/\/i.graphicmama.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/31141637\/sync-change.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>2.3. A webcam and a Microphone<\/h4>\n<p>A <strong>webcam<\/strong> and a <strong>microphone<\/strong> are essential for working with CA because <strong>the program uses your face and voice to generate the movement<\/strong> of your character.\u00a0 The way it works is simple! If your character artwork in Illustrator or Photoshop is properly set up, when you import it to Character Animator, the program recognizes and automatically tags the facial features of your character. They now are rigged to correspond to your own facial features. The features that are automatically recognizable are: pupils, eyebrows, eyelids, blinking, face movements, and the different mouth shapes. The movement of those is generated by your performance at the webcam. That means\u00a0you blink &#8211; your character will blink too. The one exception is the lip sync (the different mouth shapes changing according to sound), which is generated by your voice in the microphone.
